In Somaliland, continuing droughts resulting from fast climate change have eroded the agricultural and pastoralist ways of life of many Somalilanders. As a result, many have fled their homes in rural areas to seek better job opportunities in the big cities. These “Internally Displaced Persons” (IDPs) figure over 600,000 in Somaliland, most of whom reside in large camps. Conditions in these camps are worsening, as many climate refugees, especially children, suffer from malnutrition, poor hygiene arising from a lack of sanitation and sexual and gender-based violence. Against the backdrop of rapid climate change, more droughts are predicted in Somaliland, which will inevitably lead to a growing number of climate refugees in the country
