Algeria Responds to Mali’s Termination of Peace Accord

In a recent development, Algeria has voiced concerns and regret following Mali’s announcement of terminating the peace and reconciliation agreement, known as the Algiers Accord. The transitional authority in Mali attributed the immediate suspension of the 2015 agreement to the failure of other signatories to honor their commitments and accused Algeria of engaging in “hostile actions.”

In response, the Algerian Foreign Ministry strongly denounced the move and expressed deep concerns about the potential risks this suspension could pose to not only the unity of Mali but for the entire region that is actively seeking peace and security.

The Ministry refuted the justifications provided by the Malian authorities, labeling them as “untrue and completely irrelevant.”

It accused Mali of shirking its responsibility in implementing the agreement and systematically rejecting any efforts to revive it.

Mali’s military government officially announced the end of the peace deal on Thursday, citing the inability to continue with the agreement due to the failure of other stakeholders to uphold their commitments , as well as accusing Algeria of engaging in “hostile acts,” which acted as a primary mediator in the peace process.

Tensions between Algeria and Mali became tense in recent weeks after the military authorities in Bamako summoned the Algerian ambassador in protest against unfriendly actions and interference in the domestic affairs of Mali.
