The Republic of Somaliland has joined Kenya and the wider East African region in mourning the passing of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, who died on Wednesday morning at the age of 80 while undergoing treatment in Kochi, southern India.
According to Indian newspaper Mathrubhumi, Odinga suffered a cardiac arrest and was rushed to Devamatha Hospital in Koothattukulam, where he was pronounced dead at around 9:52 a.m. Indian authorities have confirmed that his body is currently being preserved at the hospital.
Raila Odinga, who once hosted the President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro), at his home in Nairobi earlier this year, had publicly expressed support for Somaliland’s quest for international recognition, describing it as a symbol of Africa’s democratic progress.
Somaliland’s government institutions and citizens have conveyed their condolences to the people and government of Kenya, honoring Odinga’s decades-long contribution to democracy, justice, and unity in the region.
