Burundi Troops to Remain in Somalia for Another Six Months

‎Burundi will extend the deployment of its troops in Somalia for an additional six months, following a resolution by the African Union Peace and Security Council.

‎The decision comes amid continued instability in parts of Somalia and logistical delays in deploying new forces under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), which is set to replace the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

‎Originally, Burundian forces were scheduled to withdraw by June 30, 2025, as part of the phased transition. However, the current security situation has prompted a reassessment.

‎Burundi is among the top contributors to AU peacekeeping efforts in Somalia, having played a critical role in major military operations and stabilization initiatives throughout the years.

‎The extension is expected to ensure continuity in security operations and support Somali forces as they prepare to take full control of national security responsibilities.
