The Somali National Army, with the help of Ma’awisley militia, took over several areas from Al-Shabaab in the regions of Middle Shabelle and Hiran in the early hours of Monday, the government has said.
A special operation led to the capture of Al-Shabaab-controlled areas such as Harar-lugoole and Fidow in the south of Hiran region, with government forces currently setting up camp in the area to prevent the resurgence of the group.
According to officers in the frontline, the areas liberated had been heavily suppressed by Alshbaba, adding to the devastating drought that has continued to ravage the area.
The latest development comes hours after the federal government said it had killed over 100 members of the group and re-captured up to 20 new areas in the southern and central regions of Somalia.
