Riots triggered by the imprisonment of former South African President Jacob Zuma have claimed ten lives in South Africa. According to reports, the ten include four somali citizens. Two other somali citizens were repotedly seriously injured.
The unrest started last week in KwaZulu-Natal province after Mr Zuma was imprisoned for contempt of court. He defied a court order to testify before a state-backed inquiry probing allegations of corruption during his term as president from 2009 to 2018.
Shopping malls in Johannesburg have been looted, major roads blocked by burning tires and the police and military are struggling to contain the violence. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has deployed the country’s military to restore calm.
