UN Food Systems Summit Stocktake (UNFSS+4) Opens in Addis Ababa with Global Leaders in Attendance

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — July 27, 2025

The 2nd United Nations Food Systems Summit Stocktake (UNFSS+4) officially kicked off today in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, bringing together global leaders, development partners, and stakeholders to assess progress and renew commitments towards transforming global food systems. The summit, running from July 27 to 29, is co-hosted by the governments of Ethiopia and Italy.

Among the dignitaries already in attendance is Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who joins fellow heads of state and senior UN officials for this high-level convening. The summit marks four years since the inaugural UN Food Systems Summit held in 2021, offering a critical moment to evaluate the gains made and the gaps that remain in advancing sustainable, inclusive, and resilient food systems.

The summit’s opening day featured a high-level session that set the tone for the days ahead, followed by a plenary focused on reviewing progress since 2021. Delegates will participate in a packed agenda covering key thematic areas such as investment, climate action, resilience building, school meal programs, scientific innovation, and mobilizing public finance.

Each session is designed as a multistakeholder dialogue, with the goal of generating actionable recommendations and forging new partnerships. Organizers aim to use the summit to emphasize food systems transformation as a strategic lever for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

UNFSS+4 serves as a platform not only for reflection but also for strengthening collaboration across governments, civil society, the private sector, and financial institutions to unlock the necessary investments to accelerate progress.

The outcomes of the summit are expected to inform national and regional strategies and guide future actions to ensure food systems are more equitable, sustainable, and resilient in the face of mounting global challenges.
