Historic Milestone: Israel Recognizes Somaliland’s Independence After 35 Years

The Prime Minister of Israel today officially announced Israel’s recognition of the Republic of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state, becoming the first country to formally recognize Somaliland.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, and the President of Somaliland, Dr. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, signed a joint mutual declaration, inspired by the spirit of the Abraham Accords initiated by former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Prime Minister Netanyahu congratulated President Abdirahman, praising his leadership and commitment to peace and stability, and invited him for an official visit to Israel. President Abdirahman thanked Israel for the historic step and commended Israel’s efforts in combating terrorism and promoting regional peace.

Israel announced plans to immediately expand cooperation with Somaliland in agriculture, health, technology, and the economy, expressing hope that other countries will follow in recognizing Somaliland.

After nearly 35 years of waiting, this marks a historic breakthrough for the people of Somaliland.
