President Irro Declares Road Accidents a National Emergency as Somaliland Unveils Alarming Five-Year Statistics



H.E. President Abdirahman Irro today attended the National Road Safety Conference, where he declared the rising toll of road accidents in Somaliland a national emergency. Addressing government officials, transport stakeholders, and civil society representatives, the President called for swift and coordinated interventions to safeguard lives across the country.

During the conference, Somaliland’s Minister of Transport and Road Development released shocking statistics covering the past five years. According to the Ministry’s report:

1. Around 37,000 traffic accidents were recorded nationwide.


2. At least 1,000 people lost their lives.


3. Approximately 25,000 individuals suffered injuries of varying severity.


4. Property damage exceeded $200 million.


5. Hundreds of millions of dollars were spent on medical treatment for the injured.



President Irro emphasized that the scale of the crisis demands immediate action, citing the heavy human and economic losses as unsustainable for the country. He urged all relevant institutions to strengthen road safety measures, enhance enforcement, and invest in public awareness to reduce preventable accidents.

In addition to addressing the road safety emergency, the President used the platform to issue a national drought appeal, calling for urgent mobilization of support to mitigate the worsening humanitarian situation. He announced a $1,000,000 Government contribution to bolster ongoing relief operations and assist vulnerable communities affected by the drought.

The government reiterated its commitment to tackling both the road safety crisis and the drought emergency through coordinated national efforts and sustained partnerships.
