The Federal Government of Somalia has officially reported the elimination of 1650 Al-Shabaab fighters during a comprehensive military operation spanning two months. This operation, targeting the group’s hideouts in central and Southern Somalia, involved coordinated efforts from government troops, local forces, and international partners.
The Ministry of Information disclosed that the militants’ strongholds were dismantled, compelling many insurgents to surrender to the authorities. Predominantly, these operations occurred in the Galmudug and Hirshabelle states.
The intensified offensives against Al-Shabaab were launched last year following President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s declaration of an “all-out war” on the group and the second phase of the operations is currently underway in many parts of the country.
The government claims to have successfully liberated substantial territories from Al-Shabaab’s control. As of now, Al-Shabaab has neither confirmed nor refuted the government’s report towards killing 1650 fighters in the last two months.
