Galmudug State of Somalia confirmed the death of four students in an explosion triggered by a planted landmine in Bangelle village.
The Galmudug’s Ministry of Education and Culture said it was investigating the nature of the device, but they suspect it to be a shell projectile dropped by unknown persons within the village.
The ministry identified the four children as Kaamil Daror Mohamed who was in grade three, AhmedWeli Qorane grade four, Sharmarke Abdiqulkadir grade four, and Abdullahi Shukri Mohamed who was in grade six.
This is not the first time Somali school children have died from a planted landmine explosion. It has happened several times before in the country and is one of the most common problems faced by rural students.
