Somaliland authorities have apprehended Ugbaad Aragsan, a prominent female singer, in Hargeisa on allegations of disseminating content via social media platforms that is purportedly inconsistent with Islamic ethics.
According to a statement issued by the police, ongoing investigations are underway, and Aragsan will be promptly brought before the court to address the charges leveled against her.
In recent public statement, Aragsan publicly aligned herself with the Somaliland opposition party, Waddani, ahead of the forthcoming elections scheduled for later this year. Also, she released a musical composition endorsing Abdirahman Irro’s candidacy for the presidential election just days prior to her arrest.
Speculation has arisen regarding the potential motives behind her detention, with some attributing it to her recent visit to Somalia’s Puntland region.
