Somaliland’s UCID party has expressed its opposition to the newly announced election timeline presented by the electoral commission. The party’s stance marks it as the first political entity to formally disapprove of the sequencing of elections as proposed.
In an official statement issued by the UCID party, the commission’s decision has been deemed unconstitutional due to the fact that the upcoming Political Parties and Associations election, which is scheduled to occur first, lacks the necessary election laws to ensure the proper conduct of the electoral process.
The party’s statement strongly admonished the national electoral commission against proceeding with an election that lacks the appropriate election laws and underscored the crucial importance of preserving the country’s constitution during this critical phase.
As per the Electoral Commission’s recent statement on Monday, the Political Parties and Associations election has been slated to take place on the 28th of December 2023, followed by the Presidential election scheduled for the 13th of November 2024.
To enable smooth and timely execution of the elections within the specified time frame, the electoral body has urgently called upon the Parliament to expedite the approval of the necessary election laws.
