The Federal government of Ethiopia has promoted its counselor general in Somaliland to full ambassador, a move that may trigger diplomatic tension between Ethiopia and Somalia. This makes Ethiopia the first state in the world to post a full ambassador to Somaliland.
The announcement came barely a few days after Somaliland President Bihi paid a visit to Ethiopia and held talks with Prime minister Abiy Ahmed. Both administrations have not yet disclosed the agenda of that meeting to the public.
Ethiopia and Somaliland have had close diplomatic relations since Somaliland announced its sovereignty and it is considered as the main gate of Somaliland’s diplomacy.
Somaliland appears to be strengthening its foreign policy in recent months, prompting the Uk parliament to debate Somaliland’s recognition last week.
