New clashes between Somaliland security forces and local militia have resumed today in LasAnod. Initial reports say both sides have used heavy weapons . However no immediate casualties were reported.
Garad Mukhtar Garad Ali, one of the traditional elders confirmed the resumption of the fighting between the warring sides and underlined the war started “within the city”. Which was initially taking place at the outskirts of the city.
Garaad Mukhtar claimed that Mahad Canbaashe, a senior Somaliland Military commander, was leading the attack. However, the Somaliland ministry of interior issued a response against the traditional leader’s claim saying that its forces were attacked by the local militia and terrorist groups.
The fighting has entered for the third week even as the international partners mount pressure on the warring sides to de-escalate tension, urging the parties to immediately cease hostilities and resolve their disputes through dialogue to prevent any further suffering.
