Grand Sultan’s Return Marks Fulfillment of Cirro’s Election Promise

Goraya-cawl, Somaliland – The Grand Sultan of the Gadabuursi clan, Ugaas Abdirashid Ugaas Rooble Ugaas Doodi, was given a rapturous welcome today in the border town of Goraya-cawl, after traveling from Jigjiga, the capital of Ethiopia’s Somali Regional State.

The historic homecoming drew participation from Somaliland cabinet ministers, members of parliament, traditional leaders, and hundreds of residents from Awdal region, who waved fresh green branches to express joy and respect for their clan leader.

In his address, the Grand Sultan urged the people of Somaliland to safeguard peace, unity, and cohesion, which he said were the foundation of the nation’s strength.

His return comes in the wake of the November 2024 presidential election, in which President Abdirahman Cirro and the opposition Waddani party secured victory. During the campaign, President Cirro had pledged to restore ties with the Grand Sultan and to accord him the respect and recognition that had been lost under the previous administration.

The Sultan had been living outside Somaliland for years, following political disagreements with former President Muse Bihi Abdi.

Today’s reception is seen as another fulfilled promise by President Cirro, symbolizing reconciliation and renewed trust between Somaliland’s traditional leadership and the state.
