President Bihi says electorates at liberty to choose leader of their choice

In his speech at the Independence Day celebration, the President of Somaliland Muse Bihi stated that the current generation is more fortunate than their predecessors as they can elect their favorite representatives or president from any political party where as in the past it was not possible.

During the independence celebration, the president, who spoke on the significance of 18th May, narrated the historical accounts of the day. Bihi said things have changed positively especially in the political landscape of the country. He said the current generation was lucky to have multiple parties as it avails them the opportunities of selecting the representatives of their choice.

He also noted that his administration has reduced, significantly, the national level of youth unemployment and therefore urged the private businesses to also level up their efforts of creating new jobs for the public.
The president appreciated international partners and the citizens for coming out in masses and urged them to continue to give solidarity to their beloved fatherland.

The 18th May which represents the fruits of the sacrifice of many years of struggle and warfare, is set aside to commemorate its secession from the unsatisfied unity with Somalia. Becoming independent in 1960, the British Somaliland amalgamated with the former Italian Somali to form Somalia. However, when self-determination movement came up it resulted into a cold Civil War between 1988 and 1991.
After war ended, Somaliland officially declared its independence on the 18th of May 1991 and the day is being celebrated every year in grand style.
