Somaliland Lawyers and Intellectuals Unite to Support Recognition Efforts

Hargeisa, August 18, 2025 – The Somaliland Lawyers Association (SOLLA) and the Somaliland Intellectual Forum (SLIF) have announced a historic partnership

aimed at strengthening national cooperation and supporting the country’s push for international recognition.

In a meeting held in Hargeisa, the two organizations agreed to work hand in hand in advancing Somaliland’s civic and national interests. The partnership includes plans to organize legal and academic forums, produce joint research, and raise public awareness on legal matters across the country. Both sides also pledged to collaborate in defending human rights, promoting the rule of law, and backing Somaliland’s democratic institutions.

A key outcome of the meeting was the commitment by SOLLA and SLIF to support the government’s ongoing diplomatic efforts for international recognition. The organizations highlighted that recognition is essential for strengthening Somaliland’s sovereignty, unlocking economic opportunities, and building stronger partnerships with the global community.

The two bodies also expressed their full support for the recent statement by U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, who called on the United States to recognize Somaliland. They emphasized that such advocacy, combined with Somaliland’s proven track record of stability and democracy, demonstrates why the country deserves international acceptance.

“This cooperation between intellectuals and legal professionals shows Somaliland’s determination to move forward as a united nation,” said a joint statement from the groups. “By standing together, we can strengthen our government’s efforts on the global stage and secure the recognition our people deserve.”

The meeting concluded with a call for Somalilanders to reject tribalism and divisions, and instead uphold unity, solidarity, and national sovereignty — values that both organizations described as critical in advancing the recognition cause.

Observers hailed the agreement as a significant step toward building a stronger national front, with intellectuals and lawyers joining forces to reinforce Somaliland’s legal, diplomatic, and political position in the international arena.
