The Republic of Somaliland has today celebrated its 30th anniversary since withdrawing unity with Somalia in 1991.
The Celebrations were held across the country even though this year there was no military parade from the Somaliland defence forces and other represented communities due to the fear of Covid-19.
Somaliland President Musa Bihi Abdi sent his heartfelt best wishes to the
people of Somaliland as they mark 30 years of self rule despite the country still being unrecognised.
This horn of Africa nation has close diplomatic ties with the EU, UK, U.S.A. and other regional countries including Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti. Several foreign states have already started opening up their embassies in Hargeisa, the capital city of Somaliland. Some have consulate offices while others are already on their way to Hargeisa to launch a bilateral agreement with Somaliland.
Somaliland was a former British protectorate and briefly gained independence on June 26, 1960, before merging with Italian Somaliland to form the Somali Republic on July 1, 1960. Its five days of independence were recognized by 35 countries and the international community, including the US and UN.
Following the overthrow of Somalia’s military ruler Siad Barre in 1991, Somaliland unilaterally declared independence from Somalia on May 18 of the same year within the borders of the former British Somaliland.
