A statement published by Somaliland national electoral commission on social platforms announced that the members have ousted the Chairman Abdirashid Riyo Raac and replaced him with Kaltum Sheikh Hasan Abdi.
The statement by the electoral commission did not specify the reasons behind the suspension of the chairman, but extended a thankful message for his service during his tenure in office. He managed to hold the first combined elections; house of representatives and the city council in which opposition parties secured a majority of the seats.
Riyo Raac did not officially comment on his suspension.
The electoral commission said members have unanimously elected Kaltum Sheikh Hasan Abdi as the new chair. Meanwhile, she is becoming the first female to chair the national electoral commission in Somaliland history.
