Somaliland’s Garhajis clan who have been meeting in Burao since Tuesday have issued a strong communique on the current electoral impasse. It started with a scathing criticism of the president who allegedly usurped the powers of all the branches of the government.
The clan issued an ultimatum for political actors to reach an agreement on the timeline of the presidential election before November the thirteenth. Otherwise, the communique said, the clan has decided to not have any election in their territories.
Further, the communique has endorsed the timetable issued by the National electoral commission that said elections could be held in June next year.
The clan warned that the prolonged political fragmentation could result in security threats across the country and the region. Therefore, they urged the international community for intervention to prevent such predicted threats to happen in Somaliland.
