Somaliland’s detained opposition figures and two journalists made their first appearance at Maroodijeeh regional court on Thursday morning after they were arrested on 9th june after opposition staged protests in Hargeisa, demanding the government to expedite the electoral process.
In today’s hearing, the court granted the police seven days to remand and investigate crimes against the defendants who are now in the eighth day of police custody. The deputy chair of the largest opposition party Ahmed Hamarje and the press secretary of UCID party Yusuf Keyse are among the political prisoners.
Waddani party officials noted that the police tortured opposition figure during the protests and pledged to continue nationwide demonstrations if the government does not pay attention to the public demands.
Opposition parties repeatedly accused Bihi’s administration of attempting an election delay though the governed denied the accusations. Somaliland’s presidential election is expected to take place on 13th November.
