The Somalia state owned media confirmed that three al-Shabaab members have surrendered to the Somalia national army in southern Somalia. According to Somali National Television (SNTV), the trio contacted military commanders in Wajid town of Bakool to facilitate their defection.
The development comes barely two weeks after Somali forces foiled al-Shabaab attack on Hudur town. Somalia military claimed to have killed several al-Shabab militants in clashes and recovered weapons.
Bodies of five al-Shabaab fighters who were killed in the fighting were displayed in the centre of the town. The group had pledged to destabilise the country’s ongoing elections.
