Daalo, Somaliland – June 30, 2025
A massive wildfire has devastated the Daalo Mountain forest in eastern Somaliland, burning through approximately 60 square kilometers of pristine woodland in just under 10 hours. The fire, which began at around 11:00 AM today, raged uncontrollably until late evening, threatening one of the country’s most iconic natural landscapes.
Known for its rare tree species, breathtaking views, and diverse wildlife, the Daalo forest is a cornerstone of Somaliland’s ecotourism and environmental heritage.
Despite the scale of destruction, no human casualties have been reported so far, though several individuals sustained minor injuries during the firefighting efforts. With no professional fire services in the region, local police and residents mounted a desperate response using only branches, shovels, and buckets to fight the flames across steep and inaccessible terrain.
> “We raced against time with branches and shovels,” said one community elder. “Without roads or equipment, we could only slow the fire—not stop it.”

Authorities say the cause of the blaze remains under investigation. However, preliminary suggestions point to strong winds or traditional fire-based honey harvesting as potential triggers. Residents are being urged to share any information that could assist the inquiry.
The loss of such a forested area not only affects wildlife habitats and ecosystems, but also strikes at the heart of tourism and the local livelihoods that depend on the forest.
